The market will close at 1 PM ET on Christmas Eve Tuesday, and trading is expected to be slow.  While it will be a slow day of trading, historically the market has done pretty well on Christmas Eve.  

Below is a table highlighting the S&P 500's (SPX) (SPY) performance on Christmas Eve (12/24) going back to 1928.  As shown, the index has averaged a gain of 0.25% on Christmas Eve (median +0.17%) with positive returns 68% of the time.  The average move for every trading day in the S&P 500's history is 0.03%, so the Christmas Eve average of +0.25% is about 22 bps better than average.
